WHAT IS 100-YEAR SERVICE LIFE? HOW SHOULD I SELECT THE RIGHT PRODUCT?

Background
As stated in the EN1990 table 2.1, monumental building structures, bridges and other civil engineering structures are classified in design working life category 5 and they should be designed with a design working life for 100 years.

It was not easy to fulfill this requirement before due to the limitation in the product assessment - ETA only indicates an intended design life for 50 years. There had been a lot of test reports and expert opinion on how to assess the product performance for an extended design working life. However, they are based on different assessment method and cannot be easily compared.

Finally, the 100-year design working life for post-installed rebar application is possible with the update of the European Assessment Document (EAD 330087), which includes the product assessment method for 100 year design working life.

 
Product selection
Hilti HY 200-R V3 and RE 500 V4 are the most advanced chemical anchors in the Hilti portfolio and come with a broad coverage on ETA documents. To identify whether the product and its ETA support a broader design working life, there are several areas which you can look into (below examples are extracted from ETA of RE 500 V4 & HY 200-R V3)

1.    Check out the products ETA

2.   In here you will find the section for ‘Specification of the intended use’, the ETA should specify the assumed working life of the anchor product to be only 50 or 100 years

 
3.    Table for performance data is usually specified when 100 years working life is assessed.
